Joey Kirk and Angela Brinton of Cal State Northridge finished second in voting by sports information directors for athlete-of-the-year honors in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.
In men’s voting, Kirk, an All-American soccer player, was runner-up to Miles Walker, a tennis player from Chapman College who was national singles champion.
In women’s voting, Brinton, the Division II Player of the Year in volleyball, was second to distance runner Sylvia Mosqueda of Cal State Los Angeles.
Northridge won the conference’s Ironwoman trophy for having the best all-around women’s athletic program. The Lady Matadors won for the fourth year in a row. The winner is determined based on a system that allocates points for a school’s finish in the CCAA standings in each sport. CSUN was third, behind Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UC Riverside, in the men’s standings.
