U.S. Conducts 3rd A-Test in 3 Weeks

LAS VEGAS — The United States conducted its third nuclear test in less than three weeks Thursday, just hours after the conclusion of the Moscow summit.
The test shook the Nevada desert and registered on seismic equipment atop hotels and casinos here, 110 miles from Ground Zero. The blast measured 5.3 on the Richter scale.
Nuclear testing was one of the issues addressed in Moscow, with the Soviet Union and the United States formally agreeing to monitor each other’s tests this summer.
Soviet scientists who are setting up monitoring equipment at the Nevada Test Site were at Mercury, Nev., 52 miles from Ground Zero, at the time of the blast.
