Johnson Hurt, May Not Face Lewis

EUGENE, Ore. — Carl Lewis’ coach said Wednesday the Olympic champion’s sprint series against world record-holder Ben Johnson probably will not be held because of an injury to the Canadian.
“I don’t think it ever will come off,” Tom Tellez said at the NCAA track and field championships.
Johnson, who set the world record of 9.83 seconds in the 100-meter dash last year at the World Championships at Rome, suffered a partial tear in his left hamstring during a race at Tokyo May 13.
He reportedly is recuperating at the Caribbean island of St. Kitt’s and is not expected to compete again until the Canadian championships Aug. 5-6 at Ottawa.
