Man, 78, Gets Prison Term for Mercy Killing of Wife

ALEXANDRIA, Minn. — A 78-year-old retired farmer will serve at least 28 months in prison for the shooting death of his wife, who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, a judge ruled Thursday.
Oscar Carlson, who has said he shot his 71-year-old wife, Agnes, in February to end her suffering from the disease, will be sent to Stillwater state prison immediately. Under the 43-month term imposed by Douglas County District Judge Paul Ballard, Carlson will be eligible for parole in 28 months.
