CAMPAIGN ’88 : Jackson Helps Load Gift

The Rev. Jesse Jackson on Wednesday loaded food and medical supplies onto a truck in San Francisco that was bound for Central American children and urged a new U.S. vision toward the war-torn region.
Jackson made an impassioned speech in a parking lot near Fisherman’s Wharf to some 300 people, including some veterans who sponsored the 3,000-mile “Veterans Peace Convoy” to Nicaragua.
“I’m glad to see veterans and sensitive people come together,” Jackson said, speaking enthusiastically but in a hoarse voice. “But the $10 billion spent chasing 3 million Sandinistas, corrupting 15,000 Contras, that money should have been spent chasing poverty, illiteracy and disease and building houses . . . in Central America.
“It was immoral and illegal and a misappropriation of funds,” Jackson charged, drawing loud applause from the ethnically diverse crowd.
