Local News in Brief : Bridge to Terminal Island Closed

The Commodore Heim Bridge, which connects the Long Beach portion of Terminal Island to Wilmington, will be closed for repairs between 8 tonight and 5 a.m. Friday, according to California Department of Transportation officials.
Jim Fowler, associate transportation engineer for Caltrans, said a fender that protects one of the bridge’s support piers has been hit by barges twice in the past six months. The more recent accident, which occurred May 4, caused the fender to drop to the water, leaving the pier exposed.
“It is kind of naked right now and could take a hit,” Fowler said, calling the repair “a preventive measure.”
Caltrans will close California 47 northbound at Ocean Avenue in Long Beach; the New Dock Street on-ramp also will be closed. The southbound California 47 will be closed at Anaheim Street in Wilmington, and the Henry Ford on-ramp will be closed.
Fowler said Caltrans employees will perform emergency, temporary repairs on the pier tonight and make permanent repairs in a few months. He said the bridge may be closed again for several nights at that time.
