Soviets Leave Afghanistan

I look at the pictures of the Soviet troops withdrawing from Afghanistan and see the faces of American GIs leaving Vietnam.
Their expressions and their questions are the same, and serve as reminders of the uselessness of war as a means of resolving conflict.
In both cases years of fighting and huge costs in human life and diverted resources failed to achieve the desired ends.
Our leaders must understand what the people already know about wars: We can’t win them and we can’t afford them.
