South Gate : Police Chief Will Retire

After 30 years, South Gate Police Chief Norman Phillips is retiring from a life of fighting crime.
Phillips, who rose through the ranks to command the department’s 87 sworn police officers and 35 civilian employees, has announced his retirement effective Sept. 16.
“I’m tired. I’m weary. I’m going to go fishing. I’m also going to enjoy my eight grandkids,” said Phillips, 52. He and his wife, Laura, have five children.
A graduate of South Gate High School, Phillips graduated with honors from Pepperdine University in 1977 with a degree in business management.
Phillips started as a patrolman in 1958 and has been chief since 1981. His salary is about $74,500 a year.
