Lakewood : Reclaimed-Water Project

Lakewood is expected to begin work by mid-June on a $1-million, 6-mile-long reclaimed-water irrigation system that would link the city’s parks, schools and landscaped medians to an existing reclaimed-water system in Cerritos.
The system will reduce the city’s dependence on the Metropolitan Water District, which sells water directly to the city, said Donald Waldie, a city spokesman. The reclaimed water is not drinkable but is considered safe for irrigation, he said.
Also in June, the Lakewood Parks and Recreation Department is scheduled to begin upgrading old lighting and adding new lights to expand night sports activities at San Martin Park.
The project, expected to take 2 1/2 months, will cost the city $109,212. The money was provided through a state parklands development grant.
