HONOLULU — Exiled Philippine President Ferdinand E. Marcos was in guarded condition today in the intensive-care unit of St. Francis Medical Center, where he was taken after complaining of chest pains, a hospital spokesman said.
Marcos, 70, was admitted about 8 p.m. Tuesday on the advice of his doctor because of the chest pains, said Eugene Tiwanak, the hospital’s assistant administrator.
Family spokesman Arturo Aruiza said Marcos told aides that he had the chest pains for most of the day Tuesday and that they got worse after an hourlong interview with Al Neuharth, chairman of the Gannett newspaper chain.
“The president actually has been feeling the pains since his mother died,” Trinidad said. Marcos’ mother, Dona Josefa, died May 4 in the Philippines at 96.
