Beijing’s First Beauty Contest Is Canceled

BEIJING — The first beauty contest scheduled in Beijing has been canceled after a spate of copycat competitions around the nation undermined a fledgling bid to hold Western-style pageants, organizers said Tuesday.
The cancellation comes amid a widening crackdown on beauty contests, including harsh criticism from officials and citizens and the cancellation earlier of a “Miss Shanghai” competition.
It was the latest sign of official discomfort with displaying China’s feminine beauty, following a wave of competitions geared to select the prettiest women in many large cities.
