Local News in Brief : Gang Arrests Top 3,000

During its first three months of operation, a Los Angeles police “anti-gang, anti-drug” unit has been responsible for 3,004 arrests, one-third of them involving suspected gang members actively involved in drug sales, Deputy Police Chief Glenn A. Levant said Tuesday.

Levant, head of the department’s new Gang-Related Active Trafficker Suppression (GRATS) program, said his officers have also shut down 116 drug “rock” houses and seized 144 weapons.

“The early impact that GRATS operations have had on gang-related crime and narcotics trafficking is encouraging and all signs project a strong impact,” Levant said in a report to the city Police Commission.
