Local News in Brief : Santa Ana : Tax Office Plagued by Phone System Maladies

A breakdown in the county’s new telephone system caused long delays for people trying to call the county tax collector with questions about their delinquent property tax bills, officials said Tuesday.
Treasurer-Tax Collector Robert L. Citron said the problem was caused when three of the nine telephone lines into the county tax office went down, making it almost impossible to get an open line into the department.
The problem was made worse because 42,000 delinquent-tax notices went out last week. Tax office workers said this is one of the busiest times of year because thousands of people call the department at 834-3411 with questions about their bills.
Citron said his department was connected to the county’s new, $15-million telephone network last week, and almost immediately there were problems with the incoming lines.
“We’re working day and night to get this problem fixed,” Citron said. “It’s causing a lot of inconvenience. We hope to get this thing right soon.”
