The Palisades High School volleyball team won its third City 4-A Division boys’ title in four years by beating Chatsworth, 16-14, 15-8, 11-15, 15-8, Friday night at UCLA’s Wooden Center in a 2-hour 40-minute match that ended at 11:45 p.m.
It was Chatworth’s fourth consecutive championship loss.
Chatsworth and Palisades traded points throughout the first game. Chatsworth took leads of 12-9 and 14-11, but Palisades scored five consecutive points to win. Paul Garrett, the Dolphins’ 6-foot 9-inch middle blocker, had 3 kills and Chatsworth committed 2 errors in Palisades’ run.
Palisades took that momentum into the second game, jumping out to a 9-2 lead on the hitting of Garrett and the sloppy play of the Chancellors. Chatsworth rallied, coming within 9-8 of the Dolphins, but Palisades scored the last six points to take the game.
In the third game, the Chancellors scored 11 of the last 12 points, but after leading, 4-2, in the fourth, Chatsworth let the game, and the match, slip away.
Despite the loss of All-City middle blocker Coley Kyman, Reseda defeated Bell in four games to take the City 3-A boys’ volleyball title.
Even without Kyman, who was hospitalized with spinal meningitis, the Regents won, 17-15, 4-15, 15-13, 16-14, as Kyman’s younger brother, Robert, sophomore Scott Kent, Mike Marzahl and Pat Shinder led the way.
The win avenged last season’s semifinal loss to the Eagles and handed Bell (19-1) its first loss of the season.
Reseda struggled with Bell for most of the 2 1/2-hour match. In the first game, Reseda’s biggest lead was four points and Bell eventually took a 15-14 lead, but allowed the Regents to score two points to take a one-point lead and then the game.
Marzahl and Kent led Reseda (15-1) with 24 kills and 5 blocks each.
