The UCLA women’s softball team, ranked first in the country throughout the season, took its first step toward the College World Series Friday.
Lisa Longaker pitched 4 perfect innings and finished with a 3-hitter as the Bruins beat ninth-ranked Cal State Fullerton, 3-0, in the first game of a best-of-three National Collegiate Athletic Assn. Regional series at Sunset Field in Westwood.
UCLA and Fullerton will play again today at 1 p.m. at Sunset Field, with a third game, if necessary, to follow.
The series winner will advance to the 8-team College World Series next week in Sunnyvale, Calif.
UCLA (47-7) managed only three hits off Fullerton pitcher Anjie Bryant, but two were for extra bases.
Kerry Dienelt led off the third inning with a double, then was safe at third on a fielder’s-choice bunt. She scored on a wild pitch. Shanna Flynn singled in another run later in the inning.
