Guatemala, Belize Act on Territorial Dispute
- Share via
GUATEMALA CITY — Guatemala and Belize said Thursday that they have set up a joint commission aimed at finding a “just and honorable” solution to a 150-year-old territorial dispute, in which this country claims all of Belize to be part of Guatemala.
The commission will include representatives from Britain as well as Belize and Guatemala, and will aim at drawing up a treaty between the neighboring countries. Belize, formerly British Honduras, won independence from Britain in 1981, which Guatemala has never recognized, and Britain has since maintained a peace-keeping garrison of 2,000 troops there.
