The Reagan Administration has agreed to partially lift a curb on exporting Alaskan oil as part of the pending U.S.-Canada free-trade agreement, Sen. Frank Murkowski (R-Alaska) said. The original agreement would have allowed 50,000 barrels of North Slope oil to be exported to Canada daily but only after it passed through a mainland U.S. port. Under the new agreement, reached with the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office, the oil could go directly to Canada from Alaska. The office had negotiated the free-trade pact. The permission to export the oil has yet to be approved by Senate and House committees.
