Broadway laid an egg this weekend with $11 million worth of productions closing. “Carrie,” already dubbed the most expensive flop in Broadway history, closed Sunday at the Virginia Theater after only five regular performances. Based on the Stephen King novel, the musical, directed by the Royal Shakespeare Company’s artistic director, Terry Hands, took seven years and reportedly cost as much as $8 million to bring to the Broadway stage--where it was promptly blasted by New York’s theater critics. Two other big-budget extravaganzas also met their demise over the weekend--the $1.4-million “Gospel at Colonus” and the $2.5-million “Mail.”
