Community College Softball : Saddleback Advances to State With Grand Slam in Sixth

Freshman Kelly Mezo hit a grand slam in the sixth inning and Saddleback College advanced to to the state softball tournament with a 5-0 victory over Rio Hondo Sunday. The victory came in the second round of the Southern California Regional playoffs at Saddleback.
Saddleback (36-4) opens play in the state tournament on Friday in Hayward. The championship game is scheduled for Sunday.
Patti Taylor (35-3) pitched a three-hitter for the victory.
In other regional action:
Fullerton 4, Southwestern 0--Kristin Jacobs pitched a three-hitter, striking out six and walking one, as host Fullerton (43-10) advanced to the state tournament. Tammy Rodriguez had two hits and drove in a run. Fullerton scored two runs in the fourth, one on an error and another on a single by Rodriguez. Fullerton then added two unearned runs in sixth.
