Save ‘Little Italy’

It’s not just the property owners in the Harbor View area who will be upset if the city’s plans for redevelopment do not preserve the Italian ethnic heritage of the area, but all of us who have treasured this tiny pocket of Italian food and culture in a society that seems determined to homogenize everyone. (“City Planners Now Focus on the Harbor View Area, A Long Neglected Enclave,” May 8).

Assenti’s, Solunto’s, Filippi’s, Jimmy’s Italian Deli and other landmark shops and restaurants in the area are nearly shrines to thousands of San Diegans who cook and eat Italian food, and who would feel devastated if these unique establishments were overrun by the expansion of downtown redevelopment. Italophiles need to speak up now before development expansion gets under way; we want more of a “Little Italy,” not less of one.

The redevelopment committee should do what it can to help bring this about.
