Owners of the San Bernardino Spirits baseball club of the Class A California League want to expand their success to basketball.
Hank Stickney, president of the board of directors, said he had forwarded a $25,000 check to apply for a franchise in the Continental Basketball Assn. for next season. CBA owners are expected to approve the application when they meet June 23.
That, along with a proposed Orange County team, would give the CBA its first two West Coast franchises.
The Spirit broke a 40-year-old California League record when they drew 163,000 fans last year.
