White Sox to Stay in Chicago If Lease Revised

Chicago White Sox owners, who have a better offer from St. Petersburg, Fla., have agreed not to move the team if Illinois lawmakers approve a revised lease on a new stadium, Gov. James R. Thompson said Wednesday.
“They have given us their word that if we pass this bill, they’ll stay,” Thompson said. “Better than that, I can’t ask.”
Thompson made the announcement two days after a breakdown in talks with White Sox President Eddie Einhorn and Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf.
The White Sox issued a statement saying they are pleased with the development.
Legislative leaders and Chicago Mayor Eugene Sawyer have endorsed the proposal, which would save the team up to $60 million over 10 years.
