No pitcher in San Diego County had been able to limit Madison to fewer than two runs this season until Mira Mesa High School’s Travis Arnold shut out the top-ranked Warhawks, 5-0, May 3 in a City Eastern League game at Mira Mesa High. Arnold allowed just five hits and was aided by four double plays. Arnold (4-1) also drove in two runs with a double in the fifth inning to snap a scoreless tie.
Poway, which had lost two consecutive Palomar League games and sole possession of first place, was struggling against last-place San Dieguito Friday. But the Titans’ No. 9 hitter, Mike Beam, hit a three-run home run and added an RBI single, leading Poway to an 8-6 victory. Beam is 8 for 12 in his past four games. The victory kept Poway in first with Mt. Carmel.
Rick Page hit two home runs as Helix beat Monte Vista, 13-0, in a Grossmont League game. Page was 4 for 6 with 6 runs batted in for No. 1-ranked Helix.
