A junior at Saddleback High School in Santa Ana was selected by Gov. George Deukmejian to be next year’s student member of the state Board of Education. Maryela Martinez, who will be the first Latina student to serve on the board, was born in Cuba, from which she and her family fled in 1980. She will be a voting member of the 11-member board. Martinez, 16, a straight-A student, was chosen from among 206 high school juniors from around the state who applied for the position.
