Abilene Christian Hands CSUN 1st-Round Defeat in Tennis Finals

Abilene Christian won four of six singles matches to defeat Cal State Northridge, 6-3, in the first round of the NCAA Division II tennis championships at Sonoma State on Monday.
With Donna Sykes, Vicky Crookes and Lori Miller winning the top three singles matches, Abilene Christian won easily. Sykes defeated CSUN’s Missy Conn, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3; Crookes defeated Allison Kincaid, 7-5, 6-2, and Miller defeated Nicole Gillis, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
Sykes and Crookes also defeated Conn and Kincaid in the No. 1 doubles match, 6-3, 6-2.
Kaliko Yandall and Suzi Ismirian won singles matches for Northridge, and Gillis and Kris Anderson were victorious in doubles play.
Northridge plays Clarion University in the fifth-place semifinals today.
Northridge’s top-ranked softball team plays Lock Haven (Pa.) Friday in the opening game of the NCAA Division II final four at Cal State Sacramento.
Northridge (52-11), the defending national champion, will meet Lock Haven (29-11) at 6 p.m. Cal State Bakersfield (50-8-1) meets North East Missouri State (35-12) at 8 p.m. The championship game of the double-elimination tournament is on Sunday.
