A harpoon killed the 40-foot gray whale whose carcass was found wedged in the pilings of a San Francisco pier, a veterinarian said. Dr. Raymond Deiter said the whale probably was wounded in the ocean about two weeks ago and took refuge in San Francisco Bay. “It’s not common, but there are still nations taking this animal and there are also pirates,†said Deiter, who has been studying gray whales for nine years.
