College Roundup : UC Irvine Finishes Off Pacific, 9-6
Craig Brink pitched his ninth complete game of the season, as UC Irvine completed a three-game sweep of the University of the Pacific with a 9-6 victory Sunday in a Pacific Coast League baseball game at Irvine.
Pacific (20-31, 9-12) had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the ninth inning. But Brink (9-5), got Robert Flippo to pop up to end the game. Brink, a senior, finished his career with 30 victories and 24 complete games.
Irvine (30-28-1, 9-12) scored three runs in the second and three in the third to take a 6-3 lead. Gordon Staab had a three-run homer in the second and Doug Kline had a two-run double in the third.
Kline was 3 of 4, and 8 of 13 for the three-game weekend series. He finished the season with an 11-game hitting streak.
Jeff Oberdank of Irvine was 2 of 5 for his 30th multiple-hit game of the season. He finished with a .344 batting average.
In other PCAA action:
San Jose State 5-11, Cal State Fullerton 4-2--In the first game, host San Jose scored four runs on four singles and an error in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Fullerton loaded the bases with one out in the fifth and eighth innings, but failed to score. Donnie Rea pitched seven innings for the victory. Eric Cordua went the final two for the save. Mike Ross hit his 13th home run of the season for Fullerton.
In the second game, Dan Archibald scattered seven hits and gave up just one earned run. Archibald struck out nine and walked one. San Jose (31-30, 9-11) broke the game open with six runs in the sixth. Three of those came on a home run by Jon Rattazzi. Rattazzi had four RBIs and Todd Eagen had three RBIs. Longo Garcia took the loss, giving up 10 runs in 5 innings. However, only two of the runs were earned, as Fullerton (36-16, 12-8) made three errors. Keith Kaub hit his 16th home run of the season for Fullerton. The Titans’ Mike Mayne had three hits during the doubleheader to extend his hitting streak to 34 games.
In nonconference softball:
Cal State Fullerton 3-0, California 1-3--In the first game, freshman Anji Bryant (26-7) threw a six-hitter, giving up one unearned run, to lead host Fullerton (52-18), ranked seventh in the nation. Senior third baseman Val Douglas had three hits and an RBI. Charis Monroe, Mich DeBree and Cathi Hall each had two hits. In the second game, junior Erin Cassidy (21-7) threw a six-hitter, striking at eight, to lead California (37-21). Cassidy stranded eight runners. She also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
