CCAA Track Championships : Northridge Takes Back Seat; Pair Win 5 Events
Despite outstanding individual performances by Darcy Arreola and Kevin Hendrix, Cal State Northridge settled for secondary roles in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. track finals Saturday at Cal State Los Angeles.
Arreola won three events and Hendrix won two, but CSUN finished second overall behind Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the women’s competition and third in the men’s division. Cal State L.A. won the men’s competition.
Arreola and Hendrix were named the outstanding female and male athletes of the meet. CSUN Coach Don Strametz shared coach of the year honors with San Luis Obispo’s Lance Harter.
Arreola, a sophomore, coasted to wins in the 1,500-, 800- and 3,000-meter runs. Her time of 4:16.84 in the 1,500 was a meet record.
Hendrix won the men’s 400- and 200-meter races in 46.81 seconds and 21.20 seconds, respectively. He also finished second to teammate Tyrone Jeffries in the 100 meters with a wind-aided 10.61 clocking. All three times were personal bests for Hendrix, a sophomore who qualified for Division II national competition in the 400 and 200.
