A Santa Ana man was killed on the shoulder of the Orange Freeway in Fullerton early Sunday when he was struck by a car driven by a man suspected of drunk driving, authorities said.
Pablo Hernandez, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred about 2:10 a.m. on the 57 Freeway north of Yorba Linda Boulevard.
Hernandez pulled his Plymouth over to the right shoulder when the car developed mechanical trouble. When he got out of the car, a Ford LTD driven by Kenneth Caldwell, 39, of Brea slammed into him and his car, a California Highway Patrol dispatcher said.
The Plymouth burst into flames. Two of three passengers in Hernandez’s car were injured. Maria Hernandez, 20, of Santa Ana and Jose Martinez, 29, of Pomona were treated at UCI Medical Center for moderate injuries. Pablo Hernandez, 3, was not hurt.
Caldwell was taken to UCI Medical Center and will be charged with felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, authorities said.
