An elderly woman was in critical condition Saturday after her car collided with a California Highway Patrol car that was chasing a speeder in El Toro, a CHP spokesman said.
The woman, whose name was not released, was taken by helicopter to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, the spokesman said.
Two CHP officers suffered moderate injuries and were taken to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo, the spokesman said. A witness said paramedics used a hydraulic prying device to remove the officers from the patrol car.
Riding With Woman
A fourth person was taken to Western Medical Center for treatment as a result of the accident, said Bill Barker, a spokesman for Orange County Fire Department paramedics.
The CHP could not confirm that report. But according to a witness, that person is a girl about 7 who was riding with the woman.
The CHP spokesman said the accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. at El Toro Road and Summerwood Way. The CHP unit was chasing a speeding motorist eastbound, the spokesman said.
“As he (the CHP driver) approached Summerwood, two vehicles entered the intersection from Summerwood and the second was hit by the patrol car.”
