High School Roundup : Beam’s 3-Run Homer Wins It for Poway
It’s rare that the ninth hitter becomes a hero. But Mike Beam, the last batter in Poway High School’s lineup, came through Friday, and Poway remained in a tie with Mt. Carmel atop the Palomar League with an 8-6 victory over visiting San Dieguito.
Beam climaxed a five-run fifth-inning rally with his first home run of the season, a three-run shot that put Poway ahead, 8-2.
San Dieguito rallied for three runs in the sixth off starter John Youngkin, but reliever John Uglow came on for his second save of the week and third of the year.
Beam was 2 for 3 with 4 runs batted in and is 8 for 12 in his past four games. Ed Cornblum was 3 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Poway (7-2, 13-7). Youngkin is 5-1.
