For the second time in a week, the British government lost a battle to prevent the airing of a television news program questioning its version of events surrounding the killing in March of three Irish Republican Army members in Gibraltar. The state-owned British Broadcasting Corp. rejected a strong appeal from Foreign Secretary Geoffrey Howe that the broadcast be delayed until after a coroner’s hearing next month in Gibraltar. The program, shown on the BBC’s Northern Ireland station, included eyewitness allegations that the three unarmed IRA members were shot while trying to give themselves up. Similar charges were made by other witnesses in a Thames Television program aired April 28.
