A French naval vessel seized a Newfoundland fishing trawler in the latest salvo in a long-running dispute between Paris and Ottawa over fishing rights off Canada’s east coast. Canadian authorities confirmed that the trawler, with a crew of five, was towed to the French-held islands of St.-Pierre and Miquelon, south of Newfoundland. The seizure came a week after Canada and France reached an agreement aimed at sending their dispute over fishing quotas to non-binding mediation. Last month, Canada arrested and briefly jailed 21 French fishermen and politicians from the islands for fishing illegally in the area.
