Gulf & Western reported that it is in takeover talks with Western Publishing Group, a leading U.S producer of children’s books best known for its Golden Books series. Analysts said Gulf is probably looking to add to its book-publishing arm, which already includes Simon & Schuster and Prentice Hall. Western Publishing said in a statement issued from its Los Angeles headquarters that the talks with Gulf & Western were on a non-exclusive basis.
