Though rightfully considered the first and best English folk-rock band, Fairport has rarely been as good as the sum of its parts (including the late Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson, Dave Swarbrick and Dave Mattacks). Same goes for this 110-minute documentary of the band’s first 20 years. The survey contains some fine archival footage and incisive comments, but glosses over much of the band’s history in favor of concert footage featuring the latest (and decidedly inferior) lineup of the band shot at the 20th Anniversary Fairport reunion festival in 1987.
