Community College Roundup : Wardrup Leads Saddleback Golfers
Saddleback College’s Jon Wardrup, who shot a four-under par 139, was the medalist Monday in the Southern California community college championships at Simi Hills Golf Course.
Saddleback placed second, with a score of 765, in the 36-hole tournament and earns a trip to the next week’s state finals in West Covina along with the other top four finishers. Long Beach College won the tournament with a 764, College of the Desert finished third with a 777 and College of the Canyons finished fourth with 780.
In tennis:
Saddleback 6, Long Beach 0--Freshman Gavin Fenske, from Dana Hills High School, defeated Fernando Molina, 6-3, 6-4, in No. 3 singles to help Orange Empire Conference champion Saddleback advance to the final of the men’s community college dual team championships. Saddleback will play Pierce College Wednesday at Morley Field in San Diego.
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Saddleback 3, Cypress 2--Patti Taylor (31-3) threw a three-hitter, striking out five, as host Saddleback (32-4, 18-1) rallied for the victory. Taylor has 313 strike outs this season, breaking her state record set last season.
In South Coast Conference softball:
Golden West 1, Fullerton 0--Winning pitcher Kathy Ellis (5-5) threw a two-hitter for host Golden West (17-4, 12-5) against Fullerton (40-10, 15-2), which has already clinched the conference title.
