Prep Roundup : Brummett Wins Sunset Golf Title
Brett Brummett of Huntington Beach High School shot a 153 for two rounds to win the Sunset League individual golf championship Monday at the Long Beach Navy golf course.
Brummett shot a three-over par 75 in the first round and a six-over par 78 in the second round and will advance to the state playoffs, along with the next four league finishers.
Teammate Matt Baugh shot a 155 for second place, Frank Pantoja of Edison shot 156 for third place and Edison’s Jeff Nichols shot 157 for fourth.
Ocean View’s Mike Holmes, Danny Dalton of Marina and Bob Comoglio of Huntington Beach each shot 159 to tie for fifth place and went to a sudden death, which Holmes won on the first hole.
In the Century League individual golf championships:
Foothill’s Jeremy Clevenger of shot a par-72 in the first round at Western Hills golf course. Teammate Rusty Van Cleave was second with a 75 and Duane Jensen was third with a 78. Canyon’s Steve Greenfield was fourth with a 79 and Canyon’s Jeff Heitt and Villa Park’s Trey Selman tied for fifth with 80.
In Pacific Coast League golf:
Laguna Beach 187, Los Amigos 241--Medalist Matt O’Hara of Laguna Beach shot a one-over par 33 in nine holes at Aliso Creek Golf Course. Laguna Beach (14-3, 11-1) has clinched the league title.
In Angelus League baseball:
Servite 8 Bishop Amat 0--Andy Croghan threw a three-hitter, striking out four, to lead host Servite (16-5, 9-2). Mike Robertson and Mark Pacconelli each had two hits and three RBIs.
In Century League tennis:
Canyon 15, Villa Park 3--Canyon’s No. 1 singles player, Ilkyung Choi, won his sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, as Canyon (18-0, 8-0) outplayed host Villa Park, winning 54-5 in games.
In Empire League tennis:
Los Alamitos 15, El Dorado 6--Los Alamitos (12-2, 8-0) won seven of nine singles sets to move into sole possession of first place at El Dorado (10-4 and 7-1).
In Orange League tennis:
Valencia 16, Savanna 2--Danny Yu swept his singles sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-0, to lead Valencia (16-2, 13-0) at Savanna.
In nonleague tennis:
Corona del Mar 10, Rolling Hills 8--Host Corona del Mar (12-6), ranked sixth in the Southern Section 5-A, won eight of nine doubles matches to defeat fifth-ranked Rolling Hills. Bob Atkin and Doug Schumain won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.
In Pacific Coast League track and field preliminaries:
At Irvine Stadium, Woodbridge athletes finished first in 8 of 10 heats in the boys’ preliminary events. Woodbridge’s Scott Tiveron finished first in heats of the 200 meters (23.6) and the 400 meters (51.3) and teammates Tim Williams and Louie Munoz finished first in their respective heats of the high hurdles and the intermediate hurdles.
Woodbridge girls’ took first in 7 of 10 heats. Debbie Horon won heats of the 100 meters, in 13.0, and the 200 meters, in 26.8. Michelle Muniz won heats of the 100 meters, in 12.8 and the 200 meters in 26.8
In Academy League softball:
Liberty Christian 17, Cal Lutheran 15--Julie West of Liberty Christian (7-5, 4-3) went 3 for 5 with three RBIs and a triple.
