Three auto manufacturers will notify customers that they are recalling a total 40,000 cars sold in California to correct defects in their smog control systems, the California Air Resources Board announced in Sacramento. The recalls were ordered after random testing by the ARB turned up excessive emissions of hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and carbon monoxide in various models. The models include 23,000 1983 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth vehicles equipped with four-cylinder, 2.2-liter engines; 12,000 1984-85 Mitsubishi Cordia Tredias, and 5,000 1982-85 Peugeot 505 sedans and station wagons, all equipped with 2.0 liter, four-cylinder, fuel-injected engines. The board said the repairs will be made by the manufacturers at no cost to owners.
