A near-blizzard dumped up to a foot of snow in the foothills of southeast Wyoming and Colorado. Snow dusted Denver for the first May in five years, delaying flights at Stapleton International Airport for about an hour. Six to 12 inches of snow fell in the Palmer Lake area north of Colorado Springs in the foothills of the Rockies, while only light snow fell at the ski resorts in Aspen and Winter Park. In southeastern Colorado, a tornado touched down briefly in a field 6 miles south of Holly, and 60-m.p.h. winds damaged a trailer at Sugar City, but no injuries were reported in either incident. Winds gusted to 84 m.p.h. at La Junta and 71 m.p.h. at Pueblo. Ten cities in the Southeast and the West tied or set record low temperatures, including Tallahassee, Fla., which broke a 17-year-old record with a reading of 44 degrees.
