Local News in Brief : Gang Truce Requested
Los Angeles City Councilman Richard Alatorre, law enforcement officials and community leaders Monday called for a weeklong truce among Latino and other gangs in honor of the upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebrations and Mother’s Day.
Speaking in front of a Boyle Heights house where a 19-year-old honor student was killed in a gang-related drive-by shooting April 23, Alatorre appealed for gang members “to honor a week of peace culminating on Mother’s Day and to provide for safe and happy Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the Eastside and throughout Los Angeles.â€
Los Angeles Police Sgt. Robert Normandy said extra security is planned for the traditional May 5 parades and festivals and one scheduled at Lincoln Park on Saturday and Sunday. Last year, one man was fatally stabbed in gang-related clashes at the park.
“Past truces between gangs have worked,†Alatorre said.
