Last weekend I saw “Colors,†the controversial story of the gangs, the Bloods and the Crips, the struggle for power, turf and drug money. The message is clear: Everybody loses. The decent citizen loses. The cops lose. The gangs lose. Children, not yet born, lose.

During the week I saw “Stand and Deliver,†the true story of Jaime Escalante and the unconventional teaching methods he used to inspire barrio youngsters of East Los Angeles to reach out and challenge their own minds. At the end of the movie there was loud applause.

I’d like to see both movies shown on the same bill; maybe then we would be able to make a clear choice: Do we want to continue to watch our kids slaughter each other and take innocent victims to the grave with them or do we want to tap the Jaime Escalante inside each of us and inspire our youngsters to “Stand and Deliver?â€
