Yuri Zakharevich of the Soviet Union broke three world records in the European Weightlifting Championships at Cardiff, Wales.

The 243-pounder smashed his own mark for the snatch with a lift of 203.5 kilograms (449 pounds) and set a record for the snatch-jerk total of 452.5 kilograms (997 pounds). He also regained the world record for the jerk from Stefan Botev of Bulgaria with a lift of 250.5 kilograms (552 pounds).
