College Spring Sports : Kearsley and Kim Sail Into Tennis Semifinals

Pierce’s Bill Kearsley and Sang Kim advanced to the semifinals of the Western State Conference tennis tournament with straight-set victories Friday at Pierce. Both will face opponents from Santa Barbara today.

Kearsley will face Lance Kronberg, who beat Pierce’s Tony Cohen and Cuesta’s Larry Merrer. Kim will play Peter Killian, who defeated Pierce’s Mauricio Quiroga and Moorpark’s Joey Lee.

Pierce and Santa Barbara shared the conference dual-meet title this year.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 2, Cuesta 0--De Dow pitched a one-hitter at Moorpark as the Raiders clinched their fourth Western State Conference championship in the past five years.

Dow (16-6), who is undefeated in nine conference decisions, lost her no-hitter on a check-swing grounder in the third inning. Dow has three no-hitters this season for Moorpark (24-10-1, 11-0).

Azusa Pacific 6-3, Cal Lutheran 4-4--Teri Rupe tripled home Jill Anderson with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Cal Lutheran (27-12, 12-2) a split in the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Azusa Pacific (14-15, 8-8) scored four unearned runs in the eighth inning without getting a hit to win the first game.

BASEBALL

Cal State Los Angeles 7, Cal State Northridge 2--The Golden Eagles scored seven runs in the third inning on their way to a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at CSUN, handing the Matadors their sixth loss in their past seven games.

Lenn Gilmore homered for Northridge (17-29, 8-13), his 15th.

Canyons 9-1, Ventura 3-4--Chris Joy’s seventh-inning grand slam backed Pablo Suarez’s complete-game eight-hitter in the first game of the Western State Conference doubleheader at Ventura College.

The win assured the Cougars (28-6, 20-3 in conference play) of the best record in the conference.

The Master’s 18, Biola 7--The Master’s could do little wrong in the NAIA District III game at home. Tim Kane slugged two home runs, his fourth and fifth, and knocked in four runs for The Master’s (21-23, 10-8).

Jeff Holen’s grand slam keyed a six-run Master’s second inning. Holen, who was 2 for 6 with four RBIs, set a school single-season record with his 10th homer, breaking Kane’s 1985 mark of nine.

MEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 460, San Bernardino 327, Rio Hondo 259, Chaffey 250, East Los Angeles 175--The Monarchs took a commanding lead in the second day of the three-day Southern California Conference championships at East Los Angeles College.

Hario Kajona won the 400 individual medley (4:28.5) and anchored Valley’s winning 800 freestyle relay (7:37.0). The Monarchs’ John Marshall won the 100 butterfly (56.7).

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

Valley 483, East Los Angeles 328, Chaffey 232, San Bernardino 230, Rio Hondo 223--Tracy Cordobes won the 200 individual medley (2:26.6), Shawna Sacks won the 200 freestyle (2:05.1), Nancy Sas won the 50 butterfly (28.6) and the three combined with Heather Wolfenben in Valley’s 400 freestyle relay victory.
