Local News in Brief : Cypress : Final Rites Conducted for Baptist Minister
Funeral services for the Rev. Laurence L. Hammond, a 22-year resident of the Cypress-La Palma area, were conducted this week at First Southern Baptist Church of Lakewood, his family said Friday.
Hammond died Monday at Los Alamitos Hospital of an apparent heart attack, his wife, Madge, said. He was 66. Burial services were on Thursday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Cypress.
Hammond was associate pastor and education director of First Southern Baptist Church of Lakewood, where he also served as deacon.
Hammond was ordained a minister of the Southern Baptist church in 1955, his wife said. He founded new churches in Oklahoma City and Cashion, Okla., before moving to Southern California in the early ‘60s.
He served as pastor of First Southern Baptist Church in Culver City and later as co-pastor of Hawaiian Gardens Southern Baptist Mission. He also served as a coach in the Cypress-La Palma Little League and Pony League.
He is survived by his wife, Madge; sons Brian and Barry; two grandchildren; a sister, June Taylor, and a brother, Robert Hammond.
