What do you wear in the tunnel of love? Listen found out during Bruce Springsteen’s recent stand at the Sports Arena. To sing tunes from his “Tunnel of Love†album, the Boss showed up in the same spotless white shirt, dark trousers and bolo tie he wears on the album cover. And plenty of men in the audience dressed as Springsteen look-alikes, with some notable exceptions. Listen spied Dodger pitcher Orel Hershiser in a preppy-style white pullover and singer Jackson Browne in a blue work shirt. His date, Daryl Hannah, went along for the ride in well-worn jeans and a black V-neck sweater. Clothing designer Dari, who owns a Venice boutique called She’s the One (named for the Springsteen song, of course), says both male and female customers have been asking for bolos. But, she explains: “They’re the kind of fans who were wearing sweatbands (as was the Boss) during the ‘Born in the USA’ tour.†As for Springsteen’s real-life dream date, Julianne Phillips--a k a Mrs. Boss--she danced by the side of the stage Monday in a white scoop-neck tank top and high-waisted, flared culottes.

The Wedding Battle

Actress Nan Woods kept up an unusual commute this month, from the dunes of war to Bullocks Wilshire. Between takes as a Red Cross worker in Vietnam for “China Beach,†the new TV series about women at the battlefront, Woods was getting ready to play bridesmaid in her best friend’s real-life wedding. (The friend turns out to be Jennifer Anglin of “General Hospital.â€) For fittings, Woods trekked from location in Malibu to the mid-Wilshire-district store and shed her military togs to try on an iridescent peach-color dress by Dressy Creations of New York. She ordered a pair of dyed-to-match shoes too. Listen also hears from Lori de Waal, Woods’ spokeswoman, that Anglin’s wedding gown was made by “General Hospital†costumer Bob Miller.

Running Out of Red

Mariel Hemingway and Julie Andrews tried living life as redheads, but that didn’t last very long. Their mutual hair colorist, Gary Lacy of the Michaeljohn salon, says he tinted Hemingway’s hair dark auburn for her role in “Sunset,†the new cowboy comedy with Bruce Willis in the lead. And he made Andrews a roaring redhead for an East Coast concert tour. “Red looks great on stage, but it’s not in vogue the way it used to be,†Lacy says, adding that in the old days ( last year) he dyed 10 heads red a week. As per the movie stars’ requests, Lacy changed Hemingway back to her natural dark blond with gold highlights and Andrews to a warm, honey blond.

Accessories After the Fact

What do “Wheel of Fortune†spinner Vanna White, Hart-breaker Donna Rice and “Stand by Your Man†secretary Fawn Hall have in common? The three famous blondes have recently been shopping at Fred Hayman’s Giorgio in Beverly Hills, says store spokeswoman Cathy Feliciano. Rice looked at cocktail dresses for about an hour, chatted with manager Peter Jaram and took home a Giorgio jogging suit. Hall stopped in to browse, but left sans purchase. And White, whose “Wheel†wardrobe includes many Giorgio items, added a sequined, ruffled gown to her own personal collection.

That’s Not in the Script

What’s in a name? If it belongs to Lauren Hutton, it can draw an audience of 500 to a fashion show. The actress-model was the featured celebrity last week at the Donna Gray store in Century City. Wearing short hair topped by a straw boater and a striped pantsuit, she launched gamely into her first-time role as commentator. Gail Roberts, spokesperson for the Gray chain, said Hutton started out with written notes, but that didn’t last long. She cheerfully asked the audience if she had to continue “reading all this.†Someone called out, “No.†Everyone laughed, and Hutton lapsed into impromptu chat. She also signed “tons†of autographs, Roberts says, before catching a plane to Yugoslavia where she will have another prepared text: the script of her new movie.
