American League Roundup : Stewart Gets 6th Win to Go With Record-Tying 11th Balk

Dave Stewart will take the major league record for balks in a season, and the six victories that go with it.

Stewart had 2 more balks, running his total to 11, while pitching the Oakland Athletics to a 6-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays Thursday night at Toronto.

“What else can I do but add to the major league record?� asked Stewart, who tied the record set by Steve Carlton of the Philadelphia Phillies in 1979.

Stewart (6-0), the first pitcher in the majors to win that many this season, struck out eight Blue Jays and allowed five hits in eight innings as the A’s swept the three-game series and won for the ninth time in 10 games.

“I’m still suffering a little on my control,� Stewart said. “I walked (four) guys tonight. I want to cut down on my number of pitches. I threw 128, which isn’t bad.�

Dave Parker’s three-run homer off rookie Todd Stottlemyre (0-2) highlighted a five-run fifth inning that sent the A’s to their fifth straight win.

Ron Hassey’s solo homer in the fourth inning gave Oakland a 1-0 lead, but Stewart balked home a run and Jesse Barfield hit a sacrifice fly to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Kansas City 6, New York 3--George Brett hit a homer, a double and drove in three runs as the Royals beat the Yankees to win a three-game series at Yankee Stadium for the first time since 1980.

Kansas City scored four runs in three innings against Rick Rhoden (1-3), who allowed only one run in two previous starts at home. Danny Tartabull singled home a run in the first, Kevin Seitzer singled in a run in the third and scored on Brett’s fifth homer.

Floyd Bannister (3-1) gave up 5 hits, struck out 6 and walked 5 in 7 innings. He had a one-hitter until the seventh when Dave Winfield singled and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Pagliarulo.

Jack Clark hit a two-run homer for the Yankees.

Chicago 6, Boston 0--Dave LaPoint pitched a four-hitter and Kenny Williams hit a three-run homer at Chicago, and the White Sox snapped the Red Sox’s six-game winning streak.

Williams’ fourth homer carried more than 400 feet into the upper deck in left field in the second inning. It came off Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd (2-1) after singles by Carlton Fisk and Dan Pasqua.

LaPoint (3-1) pitched the fourth shutout of his career. He struck out 2 and walked 2.

Seattle 3, Cleveland 1--Rookie Mike Campbell cooled off the Indians with a five-hitter, and Henry Cotto knocked in two runs for the Mariners at Cleveland.

Campbell (2-2) struck out 7 and walked 3 in his second complete game, sending the Indians to their third loss in the last 13 games.
