‘Farewell Moscow’
Italy, 1987, 102 minutes , 8 p.m . This exceedingly bleak and conventional film by Mauro Bolognini boasts another heroic performance by Liv Ullmann as Ida Nudel, a Soviet Jew who endured a long and harrowing martyrdom for simply having practiced her faith. It’s a grueling journey through the hell of a Soviet psychiatric prison and a Siberian labor camp, which never makes it clear that Nudel did eventually win her long struggle to emigrate to Israel.
