Local News in Brief : Shelter to Be Demolished

Without debate, the Los Angeles City Council has voted unanimously to allow the demolition of the former Evangeline Residence for Women, once one of the few low-cost shelters in the city.
Unocal Properties, which bought the downtown Los Angeles building last year, had sought an exemption from a city ban on demolition of low-rent housing facilities. Unocal officials said they had not intended to operate the building as a shelter.
The Salvation Army closed the 194-room building last year after 63 years of operating it as a shelter for young working women and students. Salvation Army officials said the organization could not afford to bring the facility up to current seismic safety or fire code standards.
