Wichita Player Penalized for Attack on Hugo Perez

Wichita Wing midfielder Dave Hoggan was fined a total of $2,100 and suspended for the first five games of the 1988-89 season for “maliciously head-butting” Socker midfielder Hugo Perez in Sunday’s regular-season finale.

Hoggan was fined the mandatory $100 for receiving a red card and ejection Sunday, and $2,000 for his action.

Socker midfielder Juli Veee went to Perez’s defense when the benches cleared Sunday, and he received a red card and ejection for going after Hoggan. But the league office said Veee would not be fined more than the mandatory $100 for a red card.

The league office had asked the Sockers to send it a tape of Sunday’s game for review.

FOOTBALL

The Chargers signed six free-agent players, raising their roster total to 83.

They are: Greg Feasel, who started at right tackle for the Charger replacement team; Mike Hudson, a defensive back who also played for the Charger replacement team; Kyle Borkland, linebacker; Mitchell Brookins, wide receiver; Charles Glaze, defensive back, and Robert Hudson, tight end.

BASKETBALL

Rodney Hawkins, a senior forward from Chicago, won two of the top honors at the San Diego State basketball team award dinner Tuesday night. Hawkins was named the team’s most valuable player and its defensive player of the year. Mitch McMullen, a junior center from Valencia, was named most improved player.

BOXING

Rigo Lopez of San Diego is scheduled to face Young Dick Tiger of Los Angeles in a junior middleweight bout tonight at the El Cortez Convention Center.

Tiger is ranked No. 15 by the World Boxing Council. He has won 21 of 24 bouts, with 16 knockouts. Boxing begins at 7:30 p.m.; doors open at 5:30. For information call 470-7300.

TRACK

Mary Decker Slaney will compete in the mile in the Michelob Invitational at Balboa Stadium on June 25.

It will be one of Slaney’s last races before she attempts to qualify for the Olympics in the 3,000 meters at the U.S. trials, July 15-24 at Indianapolis.

BASEBALL

Four players hit home runs as Oral Roberts defeated United States International, 15-5. Oral Roberts (22-25) scored seven runs in the first three innings and added seven more in the ninth. Scott Coutts had a solo home run for USIU (17-24-1).

Southern California College scored seven runs in the top of the third to defeat Point Loma Nazarene College, 10-7, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game.
