Socialist Francois Mitterrand, campaigning to become the first modern French president to win reelection, held a clear lead in final opinion polls before first-round balloting. The last-minute Louis Harris poll for Radio France and L’Express magazine gave Mitterrand 36.5% against 23% for his nearest rival, conservative Premier Jacques Chirac. French voters will cast ballots April 24 for a field of nine presidential candidates, of whom two will contest a second and final round May 8.
